Refractive lens exchange

Refractive lens exchange (RLE), also known as lens replacement surgery, is a common procedure which involves replacing the natural lens inside the eye with a synthetic implant called an intraocular lens. It is performed to correct short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism to reduce the need for glasses or contact lenses. This procedure can also improve vision for those suffering from cataracts.

RLE is suitable for patients aged 50 or over, though younger patients can be considered in some cases, and with a glasses prescription higher than the normal range for laser eye surgery.

Implantable contact lens (ICL) surgery

Implantable contact lenses (ICL) are soft, flexible implants which are similar to traditional contact lenses. They are implanted within the eye between the natural lens and the iris. It’s a bit like having permanent contact lenses that you never have to take out, clean or think about. The implantable contact lens surgery uses Phakic Intraocular Lenses (pIOLs). At Vision Direct, we utilise two types of Phakic IOL. These include;

  • Visian Implantable Collamer lens (ICL), which is a soft and flexible implant that sits between the natural lens and iris

  • Artisan intraocular lens (IOL), which sits just in front of the iris
